Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good for astronomy I was looking for 10x50 binoculars for astronomy. I want it to be waterproof and with individual focusing. Binoculars with IF mechanism don't have external moving parts and hence it is easier to make them really waterproof and they are more rugged compare to central focusing binoculars. If you are not planning to share the view with your friends every minute, you can go with IF. But CF is of course easier to adjust to different individuals. I looked at Fujinon Polaris (9). It weighs 50.1 oz., next was Oberwerk Ultra (0). It weights 56 oz. and Orion Resolux (0). Weight 54.5 oz. And finally Vortex Hurricane - weight is only 38.8 oz. This is the only one I can hold without using monopod or tripod. Why Fujinon cost 9 ? Because it has a Flat Field - distortion free even near edges. Other three have some very little distortion near the edges (10% of the Field). Stars are the most demanding test for any binocular. In my Vortex Hurricane stars look as a perfect points of light and planets look like they suppose to look - like a disks. If to hold it steady, "sky is the limit". I am very pleased with my choice.

Can anybody please tell me why Hurricane 10x50 weights only 38 oz.? Similar binoculars like Fujinon Polaris or Oberwerk Ultra weight 54 oz and their body is made of aluminum. Is Hurricane made of carbon fiber ? Thanks.
Asked by: Alex
The Hurricanes have a magnesium chassis. Magnesium is 33% lighter than Aluminum.
