Your Stories - First Bear
“Last year, I refurbished a 1957 Marlin 30/30 and mounted a Vortex optic, for my son to take on our bear hunting trip to Maine. On day two at approximately 11:15, he harvested a first – a mature boar black bear. We hiked approximately a mile downhill into a moose bog and creek where the hounds had the bear treed. Once we arrived, with both of our hearts beating out of our chest, I set up the shooting stick, told my son to get a clear sight of picture and let me know when he did. He cut me off and said, "ok I got it." I asked him if he was sure, because he had never acquired the sight picture that quickly – again, he said “I got it.” I told him to take the safety off and squeeze when ready. He placed one shot into the animal that anchored it quickly and ethically. I, of course was a super proud dad – however the guide/owner was just as excited and I wasn't sure why. He subsequently explained, in 40 years of hunting black bears, my son, at 8 years old, was the youngest he had ever guided or witnessed shoot a black bear.
We are proud Vortex Optics owners and purchased another Vortex this weekend for a shotgun that I am taking to Iowa to deer hunt.”
