Hunter Marksmanship is designed to help hunters maximize their performance in the field through an in-depth discussion of equipment, ballistics, anatomy, and marksmanship skills. Students will learn about proper rifle and optic setup, optic mounting, ammunition selection, shot placement, and whitetail deer anatomy.

The class will conclude with a field-shooting course of fire where students will engage targets representative of a whitetail deer’s vitals from a variety of realistic, hunting-based situations - including tree stands, natural terrain, and other improvised shooting positions - out to 400 yards.

Topics of instruction include:

  • Rifle and optic selection
  • Ammunition selection
  • External ballistics and zeroing
  • Terminal ballistics
  • Game anatomy and shot placement
  • Rifle and optic maintenance
  • Optic mounting
  • Marksmanship fundamentals
  • Traditional shooting positions
  • Improvised shooting positions (utilizing tree stands, packs, shooting sticks, natural terrain, etc.)
  • Gathering ballistic data/creating a DOPE card out to 400 yards
  • Range estimation/laser rangefinder use
  • Using scope reticle, turrets, or other methods to estimate elevation holds
  • Reading and compensating for wind
  • Field shooting course on targets out to 400 yards
  • How to train for hunting season

Student Requirements: This course has no prerequisites; however, this is not a learn-to-hunt class. Students should be comfortable and safe manipulating and shooting their rifle. Students will be required to get up and down into various shooting positions repeatedly over the course of two days, as well climb tree stands, and walk carrying a light load and rifle up and down the hilly terrain found in Southwest Wisconsin. Students may walk several miles during the final day of class. Students should consider their ability to comfortably manage the recoil of shooting approximately 120 rounds from their rifle over the duration of the 2-day course.

Student Equipment
  • Hunting rifle of sufficient caliber to hunt whitetail deer, equipped with sling and optic
  • 120 rounds of hunting ammunition of a consistent load (recommend using what you will be hunting with)
