Vortex Edge Instructor Jimmy J

Jim Jordan

Reloader. Precision rifle competitor. Part-time farmhand. Jim has your back on all optics-related questions and is probably going to talk you into trying your hand at competitive shooting.

Jim is a true “jack-of-all-trades” in the shooting world. He enjoys hunting big and small game, shooting recreationally, competing in various shooting sports (mostly precision rifle-related), planning out his next rifle build, and reloading for metallic cartridge. When not digging into a new hunting or shooting project, he enjoys spending quality time with his family and lending a hand on his in-laws’ dairy farm.

Vortex Edge Instructor Scott H

Scott Hollfelder

Competitive shooter. Bushcrafter. AK connoisseur. Scott is prepared to answer all optics-related questions and is our pick for “Guy Most Likely to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse."

Scott started shooting air rifles competitively as a 4-H member at the age of 6 and moved up to NRA Smallbore as he got older. He enjoys spending his time outside rucking, camping, bushcrafting, fitness training, and shooting recreationally. As the resident AK collector on the team, he loves fielding questions about Combloc weapons. Scott also brings his prior experience as a binocular repair technician to customers and teammates.

Vortex Edge Instructor Clay H

Clay Hinz

Turkey hunter. Dog trainer. Avid golfer. Clay is standing by to help with all your optics questions alongside his loyal hunting dog, who is probably flopped over an office chair at Clay’s desk and is a very good boy.

Clay is a lifelong hunter, with turkey hunting topping his list, followed by upland, deer, small game, and bear. He also enjoys dog training, when his dog isn’t being a bum in his desk chair. He is an avid golfer when there’s not a hunting season on. He thoroughly enjoys being able to help customers over the phone and through email and loves interacting with Vortex Nation at shows like NWTF and World Deer Expo.

Vortex Edge Instructor Taylor M

Taylor Meyers

Big-game hunter. Golf enthusiast. Gear head. Taylor loves talking all things optics, from long-range shooting to wildlife observation. He also loves talking all things gear, from, well, everything to everything.

Taylor is a dedicated outdoorsman with a passion for Western big game and Midwest whitetails. Beyond chasing big game, you’ll find him upland hunting with his bird dog. As a self-proclaimed gear head, he’s happy to discuss recommendations beyond optics, like packs, tents/shelters, boots, and more. Outside hunting season, you'll see him on the course attempting to perfect his golf swing.

Vortex Edge Instructor Mike M

Mike McDowell

Nature photographer. Amateur astronomer. Precision shooter. Mike is here for all your optics-related questions, and to explain how his digiscoping hobby is definitely not an addiction. (Spoiler: It is.)

Mike is a lifelong optics hobbyist with nearly a quarter-century of experience assisting Vortex® customers. Known as a sport optics guru, his interests encompass nature photography (especially digiscoping), birdwatching, amateur astronomy, and precision shooting. Though not a hunter, he brings a deep passion for the Vortex® product line and customer service. Mike has also won several awards for his contributions to nature photography and optics.

Travis, with his wife and kids, resides on a small farm in the heart of big buck country in the Midwest. A passionate big game hunter and adventure enthusiast, he’s fascinated with ballistics, and is perfecting hand loads for his custom 28 and 33 Nosler. In the Spring, Travis and his family share a love for shed hunting out west. Travis has traveled to Africa where he discovered a passion for local game, and the adventure other continents have to offer. Travis is a minimalist, always testing new combinations of optics to make his gear list more efficient.

Vortex Edge Instructor Cory S

Cory Shafer

Year-round angler. Big-game hunter. Upland fanatic. Chances are, if you can hunt it, Cory has, and he’s ready to help you pick the right gear to fill any tag.

Born and raised in Michigan, Cory spent most of his young adulthood chasing ruffed grouse and woodcock in northern Michigan in the fall, and musky and walleye in the spring/summer. You’ll find him ice fishing on any given weekend in the winter, biding time until spring turkey hunting. Cory loves western hunting in Wyoming where he pursues antelope, muleys, and elk. In between successful tag draws, Cory heads to South Dakota for upland hunting with his German Shorthair Pointer.

Vortex Edge Instructor Rylan B

Western bear hunter. Wildlife ecology generalist. Crossbow connoisseur. Rylan is ready to talk optics, and if you’re planning a western bear hunt, he’s got some thoughts.

Inspired by the conservation ethic of Aldo Leopold, Rylan has cultivated a deep connection to the wild, blending a passion for hunting with his foundation in wildlife ecology. Spot and stalk western bear hunting holds a special significance, representing both a challenging pursuit and a profound admiration and respect for these apex predators. Complementing his time in the wilderness, he finds satisfaction in reloading for his custom .300 WSM, hunting whitetails with crossbows, and spending any time he can outdoors.
